UX Resumes

Each curriculum track at Lambda is meant to prepare students to apply to a job within their industry of study. Resumes for each track vary in regards to industry standards for content and formatting. UX resumes can be aesthetically appealing. They do not necessarily have to follow a traditional resume look. However, over-designed resumes can become a distraction to a hiring manager, especially when they have to pass through an HR gatekeeper before they reach the design hiring manager. Components of a UX resume include:

A summary

Tell the story of your background and accomplishments. This should be tailored towards the position you are applying for, and only needs to be 2-3 sentences.

A skills and tools section

Separated by the different types of skills and processes you have learned. Subsections can be divided by “design”, “programming”, “tools” and “UX Methods”. Examples of skills or tools to include: interaction design, usability testing, graphic design, surveys, user research, storyboarding, Sketch, Invision, sketching, wireframing, experience prototyping, or data visualization.

An employment or experience section

If you have worked in positions related to the job you’re applying for, list experience above projects. The experience section should be focused on roles you have served in that highlight the accomplishments, responsibilities and skills related to the position you’re applying for. When possible, quantify! Share the numbers related to what you’ve done.

A projects section

Formatted in such a way that highlights what the project focused on, while reflecting skills, responsibilities and accomplishments developed by working on the project. You can write this section as if you’re presenting a case study. For example:

Project Title (hyperlink to the project)
One concise sentence describing the function, focus and/or purpose of the project
Built using...list tools, methods and technologies

  • Write a bullet to describe the context of the project. For example “Served as (role on team), on a cross functional team of #, with a deadline of # weeks”
  • Describe an accomplishment or how you utilized tools and technologies
  • Describe how you sourced information focused on user experience, and specific methods
An education section

Include Lambda School with “UX” highlighted as your career track. You should include any previous schooling as well. If you have any certifications, you can turn this into an “Education and Training” Section.
