Data Science Resumes

Each curriculum track at Lambda is meant to prepare students to apply to a job within their industry of study. Resumes for each track vary in regards to industry standards for content and formatting. Data science resumes tend to be visually simple, traditional, and sometimes more aligned with academia standards.

Components for a date science resume include:
A summary (optional)

To highlight your background and accomplishments. This should be tailored towards the position you are applying for, and only needs to be 2-3 sentences.

A skills section

Separated by the different types of skillskets and technologies you have learned. Examples of subsections for a skills list include: Programming Languages/Libraries, Databases, Data Pipelines/Dashboards, Machine Learning, Tools, Analytics, Statistics/Mathematics, Computer Science.

An employment or experience section

If you have worked in positions related to the job you’re applying for, list experience above your projects. The experience section should be focused on roles you have served in that highlight the accomplishments, responsibilities and skills related to the position of application. Focus responsibilities on how you used data, and data related methods/tools.

A projects or publications section

Formatted in such a way that highlights what the project focused on, while reflecting skills, responsibilities and accomplishments developed by working on the project. For example:

Project Title (hyperlink to the project)
One concise sentence describing the function, focus, and purpose of the project.
Built using list tools and technologies.

  • Write a bullet to describe the context of the project. For example “Served as (role on team), on a cross functional team of #, with a deadline of # weeks”
  • Describe an accomplishment or how you utilized tools and technologies
  • Describe how you sourced any data, or conducted research, collected information, etc.
An education section

Include Lambda School with “Data Science” highlighted as your career track. You should include any previous schooling as well. If you have any certifications, you can turn this into an “Education and Training” Section.

With a DS tailored resume ready to go, here are common job titles for data science opportunities:
Data or Machine Learning Analyst
Data Scientist (junior or entry)
Quantitative Analyst or Researcher
Big Data or Data Infrastructure Engineer
Machine Learning Engineer
